Digital Writing Solution

Digital Writing Solution

The EccoData digital writing solution allows a user to write on a piece of paper using a digital pen and capture electronically whatever is written, including signatures. Data from the pen is sent via a wireless-enabled BlackBerry device downloading to our server where the handwriting is interpreted into text. A data file with a corresponding image is available within seconds for viewing, editing and download. This approach saves time and takes hard costs out of customer processes.

Streamlines Workflow and Improves Efficiency

Armed with digital pens and paper and BlackBerry devices, mobile workers get the convenience and ease of capturing information on paper, routing it in virtual real-time using the BlackBerry device and receive confirmation of the transmission, alerts and other two-way communication.

They no longer have to manually fax, mail or scan information, freeing up more time for service and improving the quality of service. Information is captured unobtrusively as compared to alternative technologies, such as laptop computers.

Improves Accuracy and Reliability - Establishes Accountability and Control

This robust data capture solution minimizes errors associated with manual processing, thus improving data accuracy and reliability. Handwritten information is converted to text, verified and can be uploaded into downstream systems such as Health Information Management (HIM), lab, pharmacy, CRM and others. With the addition of a third-party-location tracking application on the BlackBerry device, the caregiver’s location, in relation to the person served (place of care), can be confirmed.

Digital writing, coupled with a BlackBerry device, provides a new level of accountability and control.

  • Duplicate, original image of the handwritten image is generated electronically, eliminating the need for long-term storage of paper documents.
  • Encrypted data throughout the transmission process protects valuable information.
  • Date- and time-stamp availability for all entries on the form and transactions on the BlackBerry device, providing a clear audit trail to help with regulatory compliance.
  • Paper original available as a backup for disaster recovery or technology failures.

Digital Paper Solutions

The EccoData Digital Pen and Paper technology gives organizations the ability to capture information simply and naturally—as it is handwritten— automatically converting the writing into a digital format, verifying it and making it available to backend systems such as CRM, ERP, inventory management and others.

The foundation of the solution is a piece of paper. The difference is digital paper has a subtle micro-printed patterned background behind the form layout. The EccoData technology enables a unique pattern to be created for each sheet of paper, ensuring that the correct information is correlated to the right form. Equipped with the latest digital printing equipment and quality assurance measures, our manufacturing facilities produce high quality digital paper.

The Digital Pen, essentially a ballpoint pen with a camera built in, uses the pattern to record pen movements, capturing written information. Because each sheet has the unique pattern or "fingerprint," the camera in the Digital Pen recognizes the type of form being used and whether a user has moved from one form to the next. The written information is stored in the Digital Pen's memory until it is docked (or transferred wirelessly) and the captured information is transferred to a PC. This information is then transferred from the PC via a secure internet port to the EccoData Pen Services network.

EccoData Pen Services is an Application Service Provider, hosting all aspects of data capture, interpretation of the written information, and the image generation. The processed information is provided to the client as an .xml file for interpreted data or in an image file format with an exact replica of the document. This in-place infrastructure provides simplified deployment and is an ideal solution without requiring heavy capital investments.

Digital Pens and Mobile Devices

The EccoData system supports digital pen devices from leading manufacturers including Logitech, Nokia and Maxell. Data transmission is supported wirelessly via mobile devices such as mobile phones or PDA devices or using USB docking cradles connected to a personal computer.
